Gruftboten-Interview mit Then Comes Silence: Neues Album ist fast fertig!

Kaum eine aktuelle Postpunk-Band ist derzeit so fleißig wie Then Comes Silence: Die Schweden touren ohne Ende (die nächste Gelegenheit, sie live zu sehen, ist in zwei Wochen beim Autumn Moon in Hameln), und sie arbeiten intensiv an Album Nummer fünf. Wie Alex Svenson, Sänger, Frontmann und Chef der Band, dem Gruftboten verrät, ist die neue Platte vielleicht schon Ende des Jahres fertig. Das sind ja tolle Nachrichten! Gruftbote: Hello Alex. You are the bandmaster of the Swedish postpunk-gothic-rock-band Then Comes Silence. Tell us something about your latest album "Blood", please.

(Gruftbote: Hallo Alex. Du bist der Bandmaster der schwedischen Postpunk-Gothic-Rock-Band Then Comes Silence. Erzähl uns doch bitte etwas von Eurem letzten Album "Blood".)

Alex: Yes, it’s the forth one. I write music almost every day and record ideas with my phone.

Gruftbote: What's first, the melody or the rhythm? And where do the ideas come from?

(Gruftbote: Was kommt zu erst, Melodie oder der Rhythmus? Und woher hast Du die Ideen?)

Alex: It’s very different, sometimes the rhythm or sometimes the melody. I listen very much to classical music. That's my main inspiration. Of course I like punk music, postpunk and rock. But I prefer to listen to classical music. And I always get ideas when I listen to this kind of music.

Gruftbote: Do you like to listen to your own music?

(Gruftbote: Hörst Du Deine eigene Musik?)

Alex: Yes, when I have new songs.

Gruftbote: Do you have a favorite song on the current album?

(Gruftbote: Hast Du einen Lieblingssong auf dem aktuellen Album?)

Alex: Yes, the song called „My Bones“. That’s actually the first song I wrote for the album.

Gruftbote: Your father has passed away last year. Was this in the middle of the writing process?

(Gruftbote: Dein Vater ist vergangenes Jahr gestorben. War das, während Du das Album geschrieben hast?)

Alex: Yes, I had already done three or four songs. And „My Bones“ was the first, and it’s about my father health, cause he was ill and he lived very far away from Sweden. I was worried and thinking about him.

Gruftbote: Do you like the album now or are you bored?

(Gruftbote: Magst Du das Album immer noch oder langweilt es Dich?)

Alex: I like it very much. I think it sounds very good. But I have already started working on the next album.

Gruftbote: Ah, after the album is before the next? When will it be finished? Maybe at the end of 2018?

(Gruftbote: Ah, nach dem Album ist vor dem Album? Wann wird es fertig sein? Vielleicht noch Ende 2018?)

Alex: Yes.

Gruftbote: Yay! Great news.

Alex: Yes. (smile)

Gruftbote: How do you work on new songs? Together with your band collegues?

(Gruftbote: Wie entstehen bei Dir neue Songs? Arbeitest Du mit Deinen Bandkollegen zusammen?)

Alex: Mostly I make demos on my own, and then I call Jonas, the drummer. He comes down and tries some drums. But I always leave some space for the guitars and the rest of the band.

Gruftbote: Why don't you sing in Swedish?

(Gruftbote: Warum singst Du nicht auf schwedisch?)

Alex: I’m not comfortable singing in Swedish because I don’t feel Swedish. I’m more influenced by music form other parts. Like German music or English music.

Gruftbote: After a lot of gigs this and last year in Germany, for example at the WGT in Leipzig, at the Bastard Club in Osnabrück or the Minicave in Münster: Are there differences between German and Swedish crowds?

(Gruftbote: Nach sehr vielen Auftritten in diesem und im vergangenen Jahr in Deutschland, zum Beispiel beim WGT in Leipzig, im Bastard Club in Osnabrück oder beim Minicave-Festival in Münster: Gibt es Unterschiede zwischen dem deutschen und dem schwedischen Publikum?)

Alex: The Germans are more open. If they like the music they show it. In Sweden it’s a bit tougher to crack the nut.

Gruftbote: Maybe it's because there are so many cool bands especially in Sweden. There's a lot of creativity, isn't it? What’s the reason why, what do you think?

(Gruftbote: Vielleicht, weil es so viele coole Bands insbesondere in Schweden gibt. Da ist ja eine Menge Kreativität, oder? Warum ist das wohl so, was meinst Du?)

Alex: I think it’s mostly Stockholm. Stockholm is a very trendy and fast city, almost too fast. The fashion, the trend and style change very fast in there. Sometimes I think we change too fast. For example, we don’t use cash anymore, we pay with our handy and use Swish.

Gruftbote: Isn't it a goal for any artist to be loved by the crowd?

(Gruftbote: Will nicht jeder Künstler vom Publikum geliebt werden?)

Alex: Yes, of course. I think it’s very important.

Gruftbote: Do you make the setlist?

(Gruftbote: Machst Du die Setlist?)

Alex: We make it together.

Gruftbote: Is it a fight?

(Gruftbote: Gibt es Stress deswegen?)

Alex: No. We have similar ideas of the show and so there is no fight.

Gruftbote: Then Comes Silence - what's the meaning of the name?

(Gruftbote: Then Comes Silence - was bedeutet der Name?)

Alex: It is a line from an old horror book of the early 20th century. And one of the chapters ends with the line „Then comes silence“.
