Mark Roberts, der viel beschäftigte Mann hinter We Are Temporary, hat kurz vor seinem Amphi-Gig am Sonntag noch Zeit gehabt für ein kurzes Gruftboten-Interview. Dabei hat er uns nicht nur verraten, wie Project Pitchfork-Mastermind Peter Spilles so ist, wenn er nicht gerade auf der Bühne steht, sondern auch, dass es ganz bald Neues von We Are Temporary zu hören gibt. Gruftbote: Hallo Mark, schön, dass Du dem Gruftboten einige Fragen zum Amphi-Festival 2017 beantwortest.
Du eröffnest am Sonntagmittag um 13.45 Uhr beim Amphi in Köln das Programm auf der Orbit-Stage, also auf dem Schiff. Uns freut das, Dich bestimmt auch. Für diejenigen, die Dich noch nicht kennen: Wer bist Du, wo kommst Du her und vor allem: Was machst Du für Musik?
Mark: So my name is Mark and I write and perform music as We Are Temporary. I was actually born in Germany, but have been living overseas for the past twenty years--most recently, New York.
I grew up with industrial and darkwave, and my music takes the ethos and thematic content of that music, but expresses it through more contemporary production--often influenced by top 40 pop, hip hop, wave, world music, etc.
Gruftbote: Du warst ja in diesem Jahr schon als Vorprogramm von Project Pitchfork unterwegs, teilweise zusammen mit Beyond Obsession. Dann erzähl doch mal: Wie kam es dazu, wie war es denn für Dich? Und wie ist Peter so, wenn er nicht grad einen blauen Strich im Gesicht hat und auf der Bühne steht?
Mark: Oh I adore Peter so much. He's just the sweetest and funniest guy. The whole band and crew are lovely--one of the most daring tour families I've ever witnessed.
The connection to Pitchfork came via our mutual label, Trisol. I've been a fan of their music for 25 years, and they really love what I do, as well, so they reached out to me and asked me if I'd support them. Obviously, I said HELL YES 🙂
Gruftbote: Dein Debüt-Album "Crossing Over" von 2016 ist ja noch ganz frisch. Hast Du trotzdem schon neue musikalische Pläne, die Du uns verraten kannst?
Mark: Yeah haha. So this week prior to Amphi I was in the studio recording all the vocals to my next record, which is just about done. It should be finished by end of August, and our plan is to release it with Trisol 1st quarter of 2018! 🙂
Gruftbote: Auf dem Amphi sind ja viele sehr unterschiedliche Bands. Während Deine Musik ja schon einigermaßen herzzerreißend und melancholisch ist, spielen zum Beispiel direkt nach Dir auf der Orbit Stage Rummelsnuff, deren Hits "Bratwurstzange" oder "Harzer Käse" heißen - vielleicht der größtmögliche Gegensatz. Ist das eine besondere Herausforderung, weil man ein Publikum überzeugen muss, das vielleicht sonst vollkommen andere Musik hört? Und schaust Du Dir selbst auch ein paar Bands auf dem Amphi an? Welche?
Mark: No it's not a challenge really. The joy of festivals is that it allows for much broader programming and variety. That's part of the appeal I think.
In terms of bands I'll see? Well I'd love to see Das Ich, but that might be tough since they play directly after me in a different stage. I also adore Empathy Test, who used to be signed to my own label, Stars & Letters (currently sort of on hold due to my own music). There are heaps of other bands I'll probably end up seeing and discovering as well. That's one of my favorite things about performing at festivals: I get to be a performer, but also a music fan boy 🙂.
